Cavalry battle
Johann Anton Eismann (um/c 1613/1620-um/c 1700)
Framesize 73.00 x 89.00 x 6.00 cm
In the 17th-century, the Salzburg Archbishopric was regarded as a centre of art in Austria. Native Salzburger Johann Anton Eismann had 56 paintings in the archiepiscopal collection. He specialised in landscapes and battle scenes. The bloody fray in the Cavalry Battle is portrayed in the foreground, the gruesome spectacle set in an inhospitable landscape. Billows of smoke increase the dramatic effect of the action. Troops of riders shown in perspective form connecting elements in the picture. Numerous naval battles painted by Eismann are still to be seen in the state-rooms of the Salzburg Residenz.
