The two Italian Landscapes by Dies are regarded as companion pieces (inv. no. 612 and 613). The viewer’s gaze is guided into the depth of the picture, over the individual landscape zones which
range from the dark contrasting foreground over the middle ground dominated by local colour, to the light, airy horizon paling into the distance. While in Inv. no. 612, the composition is stabilised by vertically rising cliffs and parts of trees at the side, in Inv. no. 613 a single tree stands out. In their clear structure, the Italian Landscapes follow the model of Poussin’s heroic landscapes. By using the archaising staffage figures, Dies takes this picture into the realm of history painting.
