Neapolitan artist Salvator Rosa served as a model for many Austrian landscape painters. His expressive style, his battle scenes and picturesque landscapes such as Landscape with Soldiers attracted much attention. Like Austrian painter Johann Anton Eismann, Rosa spent a considerable period working in Rome during the 1650s.
